Where the River Bends

Well there’s a rainbow where the river bends.
Said there’s a rainbow where the river bends.
I shut my eyes and lost my way
And then the prism lost it’s ray.
And there’s a highway where the rainbow ends.

I laced my boots and sung a highway tune.
Laced my boots and sung a highway tune.
Well I was wax and I was ice
And that sun weren’t actin’ nice,
So on the sly I cut a deal with the moon.

Upon that barren ground I drove me a stake.
Upon that barren ground I drove me a stake.
Felt the road rattle, hiss,
Felt it strike it couldn’t miss,
As that highway turned into a rattlesnake.

Well that fever wouldn’t give me no rest.
My God, that fever wouldn’t give me no rest.
Crawlin’ hot and clammy cold
The asphalt poison took ahold,
As I slithered off a mountain’s breast.

Mountain Lady why you sleep so sound?
Said Mountain Lady why you sleep so sound?
Well I’m your nightmare comin’ true,
Soft I’ll slither over you,
Headed for your cave so far underground.

“You’re just a silly boy with moonshine veins.
You’re just a silly boy with moonshine veins.
You don’t appear to me a snake,
You’re just a bandy randy rake
And I’ve seen fiercer heads on walkin’ canes.”

Well I woke up in a dry river bed.
I said I woke up in a dry river bed.
Heard the thunder clear it’s throat
As flash and flood set me afloat.
I’m here to tell you what that white river said.

Well there’s a rainbow where the river bends.
Said there’s a rainbow where the river bends.
Shut your eyes you lose your way
And then the prism lose it’s ray.
And there’s a highway where the rainbow ends.
